Royal Ascot : Feedback
Another style (the Ascot hats)
Poem for Julia Bradbury by Chris Brookes
gone, the lakehills-trod
foot-weathered-moulded boots
which, appropriate
to mark out allweather names
and fame
wainrighting
the rough trails
for us downcountry types from
the lowlands ...
so many, these exotic haunts
(I cut my ‘A’ Level teeth on the Langdales)
today instead, I
perforce restrict’ from the fells by injury
just memory-bound; whilst other sporty,
televisual thoughts hold
of horse-preened, jockey orange-and-green or any mix
best of all, the glamour
of the satined lace of dresses, and
the hats, life exuberanced!
one lady stands out from the throng
sheened to perfect teaste, and
parallel to the run,
of ever changing equine pace and grace
deftness of fashion change
she balances colour, design with eleganced
presentment
no need a flaunty catwalk for her
and daily
the effortless finesse
above, over, staid
time overlaid:
gents’ dead-as-dodos
top hats
hers: the finest trimmed
brimmed
tells-all-the-sporting tales
millinery: beauty of day
another sport, style, of the person.
