Celebrity Come Dine With Me

AS A TRAVEL presenter, it's fair to say Julia's been around a bit and is certainly a fan of exotic food.

In February Julia took part in Channel 4's
Celebrity Come Dine With Me with guests Christopher Biggins, ex-MP Edwina Currie and Hollyoaks heart-throb Philip Olivier. Julia likes her booze and planned to ply her guests with 45% Swedish alcohol "Akvavit". In true Come Dine With Me tradition Julia planned to serve a pudding she'd never cooked before – a melt in the middle chocolate cake but after a microwave disaster the chocolate became caramelised. There's nothing like falling at the first hurdle and when in doubt – make it into a mousse.

The guests arrived and Christopher expressed his concerns about the choice of booze. "It makes me violently ill," he told Julia explaining his past experience. "No – that's Advocaat," she reassured him. There's no way this 45% tipple could make you ill, right? Two shots in and Edwina's was feeling the generation gap – "the younger generation seem to think that if you're not drinking you can't be enjoying yourself" (oh lighten up, Grandma). With all those shots there was only one place the party was heading and that was the dance floor. Well everyone except Edwina, who get off early.
There was no stopping the other three though, who partied hard into the night. "I jus shlove Akvavit," slurred a boozed up Biggins. But did he love the dinner?

To get the party started Julia served Champagne followed by smoked salmon pate on blinis with tabbouleh and two shots of Akvavit. For the main event, Julia served fillets of beef marinated in soy and garlic with Greek potatoes and spinach ... and more Akvavit. Julia's final performance took the form of an impromptu [aforementioned] chocolate mousse.
